How to Choose a Room Heater?

It is not easy to choose a single product among hundreds of options present in the market. To simplify this process, we have provided several factors to consider while purchasing a room heater. This buying guide will help you choose the right one according to your unique requirements.

1. Heating Technology

This is the first important factor to consider before buying a room heater. There are two different types of heating technologies – convection heater and radiant heater.

Convection room heaters are perfect for indoors while radiant heaters are prefect for outdoors. For more detail information, read below…

a. Convection Heater

This type of heating technology distributes warm air evenly and consistently throughout the room. They use air as the medium to increase warmth in the area. Generally, air is warmed up by blowing over a heating element which will be circulated through the room.

Usually, the heating elements can be made up of ceramic, electric-element or liquid filled. Convection heaters are perfect for closed spaces. They are preferred method of raising room temperature for extended period of time.

Convection heaters come in two different functionalities – with fan and without fan.

  • Convection heaters with fan – As the name implies, they use fan as a medium to circulate air in the room. Fan present in this heater is responsible for taking the cool air, passing it over the heating element and re-circulating it into the room. They can increase warmth inside in well-insulated space much faster than convection heater without fan. However, due to the presence of fan, these devices make much noise.
  • Convection heater without fan – Usually heating element in this type of heater is surrounded with oil or water. And the heating process will start a very slow pace. The heating process starts by heating the oil or water first and then later heat is slowly transferred into the surrounding air. But the heat generated can stay for long time as the liquid will stay hot for some time after switching off the device. As it doesn’t have a fan, the process is whisper silent.

b. Radiant Heaters

In this type of heaters, heat is generated from infrared radiation. Unlike convection heaters (where air in the room is heated up), this device warm up people and objects in the room.

Radiant heaters are perfect for…

  • People can stay in line of its direction.
  • Rooms where people stay still for long time (like bedrooms).
  • Where people will stay only for few hours at a time.

As these heaters don’t warm up entire room, only people and objects near to it can reap the warmth benefits. It is beneficial for people with respiratory issues like dust allergies as it doesn’t depend on air circulation. As it is not dependable on wind, it is perfect for outdoors.

2. Room Heater Types

Based on their heating abilities, room heaters are further divided into the 3 types – ceramic, oil-filled and infrared. We have provided detail information below – read it carefully to understand which one suits your best.

  • Ceramic Heaters

In ceramic heaters, electric current passes through ceramic heating elements. This lets the aluminum baffle and heating elements to quickly heat up. Meanwhile during the same time, the cool air is sucked into the base from the surrounding. After that, the air will be passed over the baffles and heating elements. This heats up the air and ultimately circulated into the room using a fan. That is why, they are often referred as ceramic fan heaters.

When compared to others, they operate at lower temperatures and are capable of releasing same amount of heat across the room. Ceramic heaters are generally used for small office or heating single room.

BenefitsDrawbacks
Fan is used to provide instant hot air flowAs fan is used for air re-circulation, noise is produced. Check out the decibel level before purchase
You can aim the direction of air according to your requirementsHard to clean so dust particles get stuck. People with allergies should avoid it
Perfect for small spaces like office room, cabins or any otherNot suitable for large rooms as it cannot maintain even temperature. Because instant heat temperature fluctuates often
Cools down quickly so a safe option for families with kids and pets
Compact and portable
  • Oil Filled Heaters

Oil filled heaters just look like traditional radiators however, they are very small. They contain a series of joined columns that attached at the base with a control panel. Unlike traditional ones, oil filled heaters are portable.

Inside these columns, diathermic oil is present which acts as heat reservoir. As the oil is not used as fuel for heat generation, it will not be used which means you don’t have to refill.

Working of oil filled heaters – When you plug into the socket, the electricity will directly flow to the heat reservoir. This will turn electricity into heat which will then be absorbed by the diathermic oil. Once the oil is warmed up, it will flow through the columns. The movement of oil will transfer the heat into the metal columns. Now the heat will radiate around the room using air’s natural convection.

These types of heaters take some time in heating the oil but provide generous amount of heat enough to heat up the entire room.

Benefits Drawbacks
As fan is not used for circulating heat, operation is whisper silentExpensive
Perfect for workplaces and bedroomsHeavier and bulkier
Energy efficient as warmth will stay for long time even after you turn off the devicePoor choice for families with children
Best suited for heating larger roomsDoesn’t heat up quickly as it takes 20 – 30 minutes for the oil to heat up and deliver heat
Suitable for people who have allergies like asthma
Smart features like anti-tip and auto-off are available
  • Infrared Heaters

They are also known as radiant infrared heaters. They use the same working principle that heats up the earth – thermal energy will be transferred as heat to any object or person present in its path. Typically, infrared heaters use two types of heating elements.

a.Quartz Tubes – These encapsulated tubes usually have Nichrome heating wire (which consist of 80% Nickel and 20% Chromium).

b. Tubular Heating Element – This type uses solid metal elements for internal heating which similar to the working principle of oven – where the metal casing is heated up first which finally lets the heat transfer directly to the objects present around.

BenefitsDrawbacks
Objects and people are heated up instead of air circulating around. So, it works instantly as soon as you turn the machine on.Not suitable for large spaces
Uses light to transfer heat, so no noiseCools down quickly once you switch off
As objects/people are heated up directly, no energy is wasted. So energy efficientHeat also decapitates much faster
Compact and portableradiates bright orange lights which can be disturbing, especially if placed in bedrooms

3. Room Heater Size and Coverage

This is considered as one of the most important factors because – if you purchase wrong size, then you will end with overheated or less heated space. For example, if you purchase a large room heater for small room, then energy will get wasted and the room will be overheated. Just vice-versa, if you purchase a small room heater for large room, then enough heat will not be produced to warm up the room.

Appropriate room heater capability can be measure with wattage output. As a thumb rule, room heater that consumes 10Watts power will heat one square foot of area perfectly. So, if the room heater consumes 1500Watts, then you can heat up 150sqft.

So, if you want to custom calculate for your area, follow the below formula.

General Rule for Calculating Wattage and Heating Capacity in Sqft

As already mentioned, 10 watts of power lets to heat up 1sqft.

So, Total Wattage/10 = Total Sqft.

(OR)

Total Sqft X 10 – Total Wattage.

If you haven’t got much time to do the calculations, then below is a table representing, wattage and suitable coverage space.

WattageSqft (with well insulated, 8ft ceiling)
800 W80sqft
1000 W100sqft
1200 W120sqft
1400 W140sqft
1600  W160sqft
1800 W180sqft
2000 W200sqft
2500 W250sqft
3000 W300sqft
3500 W350sqft
4000 W400sqft

However, this value can fluctuate based on heating technology, room heater type, indoor temperature and some special cases that include…

  • Infrared Heaters – As they don’t use air as the medium to heat up the objects or people, these room heaters have the potential to heat up large area with less power consumption.
  • Ceiling over 8 Feet – If the ceiling of your room is more than 8 feet, then use the below formula
Total Sqft X Ceiling Height X 1.25 = Total Wattage Required
  • Poor Insulation – If you room is not properly insulated, then use the equation mentioned below.
Total Wattage / 12 = Total Sqft (OR) Total Sqft X 12 = Total Wattage

4. Safety Features

Just like any other electrical device, it is better to purchase a room heater that comes with at least few safety features. We have mentioned some of them below…

  • Cool to Touch

As the name suggests, it specifies that the outer casing of the room heater is heat resistant. So, even if you touch it accidently, it won’t cause any burns. This feature is not available in some of the room heater products in India. This feature is very important, especially if you have kids or pets in the home.

  • Tip Over Cut off Switch

Due to their compact size and light weight features, portable room heaters are often moved from one place to another – this sometimes makes it likely to fall or tip over, especially when it bumps with any object. In some situations, kids or pets may try to catch the room heater or even try to move it. In the cases of falling over or sudden power cut off, the room heater will turn off itself immediately to avoid any potential risk of fire hazards.

  • Overheat Protection Switch

Overheat protection is another important safety feature to consider. This is available in most of the room heaters present in Indian market. When internal components reach unsafe temperature, the sensors will notify the switch to turn off immediately.

Apart from these three features, also consider others like protective grills to cover heating coils and thermostats. Some modern room heater models come with motion sensors which detect and turn of the heater when a kid or pet comes too close.

5. Heat Settings

Most of the room heaters come with heat settings which help to adjust according to room temperature. Generally, 3 heat settings are observed – low, medium and high which work by altering the wattage. You can also turn off heat setting option by switching a button, if it is not suitable for your requirements.

6. Oxygen and Humidity Levels

This is an important factor to consider if you have new born baby at home. Generally, radiation heaters or fans use oxygen while heating up the air, leading to less oxygen levels and humidity loss in the room. This can lead to nausea, dry nose and itchy skin, especially in younger ones. To prevent this, we recommend to place a water bucket in any corner of the room when you are using room heater. To prevent any issues, it is better to purchase oil-filled room heater as it can maintain humidity levels in the room.

7. Power Consumption

If you want to find out how much electricity does your room heater consume, then first thing to consider is the wattage. This number is usually printed on the manual or specifications on the package. Most of the room heaters consume 1500 Watts but some of them may consume slightly more or less than it. So, based on this number, lets calculate the amount of electricity.

First let’s assume, room heater you’ve got consumes 1500 watts. As 1,000 is equal to 1Kilo watt, your heater consumes 1.5 Kilowatts of power.

Now, electricity bills are usually calculated in Kilowatt hours. So, we have to calculate the amount of energy consumed while running the room heater (1.5 kilowatt) for one hour. Based on that, you have to multiply it with number of hours the room heater has been running.

For example, let’s say you have been running room heater in your living room or 8 hours. The calculation will be as follows…

  • 1500 (Watts) x 8 hours = 12,000
  • Now let’s divide it by 1,000 -> 12,000/1,000 = 12 (Kilowatts)
  • Let’s multiply with electricity rate per unit. Average unit rate in our country is Rs.5.
    So, 12units X Rs.5 = Rs.60 per day.
  • If you use 1500 Watts room heater daily for 8hours for a month, then you will get Rs.1800 electricity bill per month.

8. Power Cord

It is better to invest in a room heater that has at least 70 inches long power cord. This provides enough flexibility for power placement options. It also lets you keep it away from flammable things like beds, couch, curtains and others. Room heater without extension cord should be purchased. Heaters should be placed only on the floor for safety purposes.

Having a lengthy cord lets you use the room heater even in areas where outlets are not easily accessible. It also lets you move the heater around the room according to your preferences.

Important Note: You should never use an extension cord with space heater.

9. Noise Level

Just like any other electrical appliance, room heaters also produce some noise while in operation. Some of the room heater models produce more noise than others. Non-fan heaters (radiant heaters) usually operate whisper silent. So, they are perfect for bedrooms and office.

Basic thumb rule when considering noise factor is – fan equipped room heaters produce noise and fan-less models produce less or no noise. To check whether the product you choose produces noise or not, check out the decibel ratings. The higher the rating is, the louder the machine will be.

10. Thermostat

Thermostats are one of the important factors to consider while buying a room heater. Most of the room heaters have either adjustable thermostat or programmable thermostat. With the programmable thermostat you can set a desired temperature and the heater will automatically maintain the set temperature by turning the device on and off after particular intervals.

Though adjustable thermostat cannot maintain set temperature but still controls the heat output depending on your heat settings. Adjustable thermostats either have buttons or dials to let you adjust the heat setting from low to high.

11. Size and Portability

When it comes to portability, it is better to purchase a room heater with castor wheels. Because they make it easy to move the device form one place to another without any stress on the arms. It is also recommended to look out for side arms or handles, so that you can move the heater around without burning your hands.

Along with that, room heaters should be in light in weight to move it around easily and compact in size so that it can be move anywhere like under the table. Fan and radiant room heaters are light in weight, compact and easy to move around freely compared to oil-filled heaters.

12. Energy Efficiency

Room heaters cannot handle the amount of job a central heating system can do. They are designed to warm up small spaces. If you heat up large areas beyond the capacity of a room heaters, the you will have increased electricity bills.

Unfortunately, room heaters don’t come with energy efficiency ratings. And it is difficult to compare the energy efficiency of these devices as multiple factors can have an impact on their productivity. Some of these factors are indoor temperature, space size, whether the space is insulated or not, what temperature is set and others.

But, if you want to improve the energy efficiency of a room heater, then follow these simple tips…

  • To minimize drafts and maximize heat retention, we recommend to keep the windows and doors closed while using room heaters.
  • If the room heater has vents, then clear the accumulated debris and dust.
  • To stay comfortable, it is better to maintain the temperature at lowest level instead of highest temperature at all the time.
  • Positioning the heater to the right direction lets the heat reach the target area perfectly. This will stop you from turning the device to its highest level, thus prevents any energy wastage.
  • Also check out for some features like timer, adjustable thermostat and low wattage power for reducing energy consumption.

13. Price and Warranty

A high quality room heater will obviously come at higher price. High end models will have extra smart features like remote control, energy saving mode, bathroom friendly and timer. Some affordable priced room heater models may not provide great smart features but they will surely provide enough warm that is required to make you comfortable.

When it comes to warranty, it is better to choose models with at least 6months or 1-year warranty. You can check out the warranty details in the product specifications.

Few Tips on Positioning a Room Heater in Right Place

Placing the room heater in a sensible place is an important thing to consider. If you place the heater in wrong place, then you are putting your family in danger. Below, we have mentioned few tips on where to place a room heater.

  • Always Place the Room Heater on Flat Surfaces

No matter where you place the room heater, make sure the surface is flat. If the surface is not flat, then the device can tumble down or knocked over easily.

  • Clearance Around the Room Heater

You have to make sure the room heater is not obstructed with anything. Unless it is a wall mounted one, it is better to have at least 2 to 3 feet away from the wall. When it comes to sides or front, make sure to maintain another 3 feet distance.

  • Portable or Mounted

As the name suggests, mounted room heaters are fixed into a wall. In some cases, baseboard heaters are mounted at the bottom of the wall near the floor. If you have pets or children roaming in your home, the mounted room heaters are the best choice. They are cool to touch (while in operation). However, you should make sure they are not obstructed by anything.

The most important thing to consider while installing a wall mounted room heaters is – the heat flow should not be obstructed by furniture or another wall. If you have a portable room heater, then you have to be careful where you place it. Avoid places where it can easily be knocked over. Tables and shelves are the worst places to keep portable room heaters.

  • Keep the Moisture Away

As room heaters work mainly on electricity, they should never be placed in damp areas. So, never take your heaters to camping or use it in kitchen, bathrooms or anywhere else with wet surroundings. Some heaters (usually wall or ceiling) are specially designed to be used in bathrooms. If you want to use them, then you should install them in right position. Another important thing is – never attempt to dry your wet clothes by placing them over room heaters. It is not only dangerous but also obstructs the air circulation from heater – which can ultimately start fire.

  • Clear Path

You should always ensure the room heaters are not placed in the walking path. This lets you walk freely around the house. And it also keeps children and pets safe while the heater is in operation. Also make sure there is enough space present around the room heater so that there is proper air circulation.

Safety Tips to Consider While Using Room Heaters

According to a survey, 40% of house fires are result of room heater misuse. These fire accidents are caused when flammable materials get in contact with room heater. So, while using a room heater, it is important to follow some preventive measures and safety guidelines.

  • Never operate a room heater when flammable liquids are present in the surroundings. Flammable liquids include gasoline, paint, alcohol and others.
  • It is also not recommended to leave magazines, newspapers, or any other paper near a room heater.
  • It is not advised to leave a room heater unattended. If accidentally knocked over, it can start fire.
  • Avoid placing a room heater near curtains because if curtain fabric gets sucked in, it can lead to fire accidents.
  • Avoid using extension cords to connect room heater.
  • If room heater has damaged parts or missed cords, then replace them before use.
  • While room heater is operating, please close the windows and doors. Because rain or moisture can break the unit and cause fire.
  • Make sure children are at least 3 feet away from the heater. Never leave children unattended when heater is in operation.
  • It is recommended to read the manual completely before using the heater.

Benefits of Using a Room Heater

1. Portability

This is one of the most important advantage for a lot of people. If you are purchasing a room heater for your home, then you may go with portable ones as they are easy to move around. However, if you don’t want to move the heater from one room to another, then you can go with wall mounted or baseboard room heaters. As they are mounted to the wall, they are much safer and permanent option.

2. Safety Features

Most of the room heaters are designed for portability and safety. Some of the room heaters come with anti-tip switch which lets the device turns off when it senses that the heater is no longer upright. If the room heater is using fuel for operation, then it may also come with low oxygen levels sensor. This safety feature will let you turn off when the oxygen levels in room drop to low.

3. Noise

Some heaters use fan for circulating heat while some others use convection current or radiant heat for circulating warmth. Devices with fan are a bit noisy – others can pretty much whisper silent. Silent ones are perfect for bedrooms, offices or any rooms you need a quite atmosphere.

4. Versatility

Whether you want to heat up a small area or require infrared heater for zonal heating or if you want a heater for large workspace, you can find a suitable room heater for all kinds of unique needs. Geyser buying guide – India 2021

Are you planning to buy a new geyser and do not know how to select best geyser in India? Or you are puzzled with the types of geysers and geyser sizes available? Then you are not the only one because there are other people like you who do not know how to select best geyser in India. How to select best geyser depends on purpose of hot water, where you install, bathroom spacing, your budget, instant geyser or storage geyser?, geyser uses such as geyser for bathroom or geyser for kitchen or geyser for shower, time to heat water in geyser, water pressure at home and your convenience. Lets go through one by one. Try our Geyser selector to choose right geyser by answering simple questions without reading any buying guide.

Geyser is also refereed as Geezer water heater as well. Geyser is very uses electricity to heat the water. First how does the geyser works? What are geyser water heater components? Knowing these terms will help us to understand more about decision factors.

How does Electric Geyser water heater work?

Geyser has three main components Heating element, Water tank and Thermostat. The explanation of each component is explained below.

Geyser heating element

The heating element is the most important component of the geyser, apart from the inner tank or container. Therefore, you must consider how good the geyser heating element is. Exceptionally hard and very soft water affect heating elements, just like the inner tank. The heating elements in geysers are coated with glass lining that is very efficient for preventing scaling. It also prolongate the life of geysers.

Geyser tank

Geyser tanks hold the hot water. So the tank should corrosion resistant and strong enough. There are two types of Geyser water tanks.

geyser tank
  • Stainless steel water tanks are the old models. They are getting outdated now. The main problem with such water tanks is corrosion and hard water scaling.
  • Vitreous Enamel glass coated geyser water tanks are the new and advanced models in geyser technology. Basically take the stainless steel water tank and coated it with advanced polymers which makes the tank corrosion resistant. This combination is know as Vitreous Enamel glass coated geyser water tank. They are not only corrosion resistants but also avoid hard water scaling as well. Vitreous Enamel water tanks usually have 5-7 years of warranty as well. Vitreous Enamel is also pretty much similar to Glasslined Coating.

Geyser thermostat

Geyser thermostat is like operating system of Geyser which decides when to start and stop the heating of the water. A bimetallic strip is used to convert a temperature change into mechanical displacement. The bimetallic strip made of steel and copper. Thermostat is a wrapper on this strip which takes the action based on the bimetallic strip response. A good thermostat makes sure to protect from the over heating of the water. Thermostat also help in saving power consumption up to some extent, but not completely. It is misconception that having a thermostat is license to forgetting to switch off the geyser. Thermostat has temperature ranges like heat the water between 30 Celsius to 60 Celsius. The steps are as follows.

geyser thermostat
  • You switch on the geyser. Say temperature of the water is at 25 Celsius. Thermostat asks heating element to start heating the water.
  • When the water temperature reaches 60 Celsius, thermostat asks heating element to stop heating the water.
  • Say you forget to switch off the heater. Slowly after couple of hours due to heat loss the water temperature drops to 29 Celsius.
  • Thermostat knows that water is below 30 Celsius and asks heating element to start heating the water. The loop continuous till you switch off the Geyser.

Strictly avoid gas geysers

Gas geysers were considered economical in water heating cost. But we do not recommend Gas Geysers considering its significant safety risk. Electric geysers costs 80 paisa to heat water whereas gas geysers cost 40 paisa with Aadhar subsidy LPG and without subsidy 80 paisa. Read more at Hindu and Times newspaper. Because of this reason very few brands manufacture gas geysers. Read more at Which is Better, a Gas Geyser or an Electric Geyser?

Buy branded electric geyser water heaters only

One important guide on how to select best geyser is to always look for the branded geysers. This is because branded geysers will offer you safety, guarantee and good customer service or support, whereas buying unbranded geyser is like putting your hard earned cash on falling stocks.

When looking at unbranded geyser from the price point of view, it may look profitable but will not meet the required standard and will not be safe for use. Buy geyser that discloses what their inner tank is made of because this is the core of a geyser. In addition, avoid geysers that will use up more power than necessary.

Look for geyser with ISI mark, if you want lower geyser maintenance costs. According to the laid down standards in India, any product without ISI mark will definitely increase the cost of spares such as the geyser thermostat, geyser heating element and service costs, depending on brand and availability.

Geyser wattage

Another important factor affecting how to select best geyser is geyser wattage. The wattage of a geyser makes it faster or slower. The water will heat faster if you by an immediate geyser of 4.5 kW instantaneous geyser, unlike geyser of 2 kW. In some cases, 4.5 kW instantaneous geysers can save electricity and heat the water needed for bathing by putting a stop to wastage of more hot water.Popular Geyser Articles

Geezer for hard water

Hard water damages the lifespan of the geyser. The best solution for this to take corrosion resistant water tank like Vitreous Enamel water tank geyser. To Avoid damage of the other elements like water heating element take water softener. The water input goes to water softener and the softener output goes as input to Geyser. As the softener converts the hard water to soft water – there won’t be any problem to Geyser. Read more at Best geysers for hard water.

Geezer water heater for high rise buildings

Depending on the capacity of the floors of the building, a geyser with strong tank is your best bet if you reside in a high rise building. Geyser for high rise building must have at-least rated pressure more than 6 bars and must have geyser pressure control valve. Geyser pressure control valve releases over pressured water in case of getting much water pressure on geyser tank in order to avoid geyser tank breakage. Glass-lined coated inner tank are more suitable as they will resist high pressure. Read more at Geyser for high rise building.

Kitchen geysers

Electric instant geysers of capacity 1 liter to 3 liter are only suitable for kitchens. Because you need instant hot water for cleaning. You cannot wait for 5 minutes for just cleaning a cup if it is storage geyser. Finally, make sure you have sufficient wall space to mount the instant geyser.

kitchen geyser

Horizontal geysers

Traditionally Geezer water heaters are vertically mounted. Horizontally mounted geysers new to the market. Vertical geezer water heaters requires at least two feet of vertical length on the wall. If your bathroom ceiling is low, you have decorated with false ceiling, or have attic then you won’t have enough vertical space on the wall to mount the geyser vertically. In this case horizontal geysers make sense. Read more at Difference between vertical and horizontal geyser.

how to select horizontal water heater

Solar geysers

A solar geyser is your best choice if you are living in an independent house with your family. With this choice, you will not pay a dime on electricity and able to provide hot water to total home. The initial investment is very high but it will payoff in longterm. But it will take some time to solar geysers become economical to use. Solar geysers are not suitable for large apartments.

Best geyser water heater

Another way to select best geyser is to look for best geyser manufacturers that have good reputation and high service levels. Bajaj, Havells, Racold, V-Guard, AO smith, Kenstar, Crompton are well known brands with varying capacity like 10 ltr, 15 ltr and 25 ltr. Apart from that know whether the manufacturer provides installation. Even if the installation is paid, it is better to proceed as it will be better than local plumber. You can buy these geysers online from Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal.

Geyser installation

Most important point is to avoid local plumber for installation as they do not follow best practises and safety guidelines. Install the Geyser with the help of Authorized service center. Many manufacturers provides the installation service. You need few additional things like two steel ribbed pipes, one angle valve brass, one connection nipple and other stuff. Do you want to get the water hot as soon as you wake up from your bed in the morning? It is possible with the advent of IOT – home automation startups. Now you can control your geyser from the smart phone. All you need to do is plug the room heater into the Oakter smart plugs and set daily schedules to turn room heater ON/OFF automatically. For example, you wake up at morning 7:00 AM, then you can configure in the Oakter app to turn on the Geyser at 6:30 and turn it off at 7:30 AM. That’s it, you can get hot water as soon as you wake up and you can never forget to switch off the geyser after the bath.

How to reduce geyser electricity consumption?

Best thing is while purchasing the geyser look for BEE star ratings and take the best rated geysers. Follow the below geyser usage guidelines.

  • Standing Losses
These are heat lost through the surface of the geyser. Of course, geysers lose heat which is worked out as standing losses.
  • Volume of utilized Hot Water
This is the major motivating factor of geyser electricity usage. The more hot water you utilize, the more power you will use.
  • The Temperature of the Geyser Thermostat
This is determined by default set to around 60oC for most of the available geysers. However, a number of geysers come with external control to modify this setting.
  • Temperature of water used for bathing
Your geyser electricity consumption is also determined by the temperature of the water you used for bathing and this is quite different from temperature of the thermostat.
  • Input water temperature
This is determined by location. In other words, areas and locations with colder weathers require more electricity than places that have warmer weathers.

This makes it a constant and reliable source for all kinds of applications. Significantly less energy is needed to run an oil radiator than to run other alternatives. Once the oil is hot, not much energy is needed to sustain the heat and the radiator continues to run with high-efficiency. This will prove very useful in lowering anyone’s monthly energy bill. This also continues heating after being turned off which makes it more efficacious.

No Harmful Effects

As Glen Oil Radiator Heater doesn’t heat directly it doesn’t burn the precious oxygen in the room and also keeps the air healthy for normal breathing. The heater causes no dryness, burns no oxygen, creates no suffocation and thus maintains a comfortable room temperature. Thus you can relax and breathe in the normal room temperature, without feeling uneasy.

How this works?

The oil filled heater, uses a cycle of oil which acts as a heating reservoir to keep the fins heated. The specially engineered fins maximize the heat flow but keep a low surface temperature. Once the element is heated, the hot oil circulates through the fins in a continuous cycle, keeping them warm and providing constant heat to the room. This heats a room more efficiently and consistently than electric heaters. As the oil heats the fins and the fins transfer the heat by radiation to the air the room gets heated and remains warm.

Turbo PTC Heater

Want more efficient & immediate results? Don’t worry as Glen Oil Filled Radiator heater has been designed to give instant heat, with the help of a Turbo boost PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Fan heater. This Winter, Geyser or immersion rods which is better for you?

InWinter Season in most Indian houses we find people using geyser or immersion rods for Hot Water. Many people in India prefer using immersion rods as they are very cheap. Yes, there is a risk in using immersion rods but many people in India still prefer them as they also have some advantages. Immersion rod or geyser which option you should go for depends on your needs. Every Gadget there are Pros and Cons, same-wise Immersion Rod and Geysers has Pros & Cons too.

Why Immersion rods?

Immersion rods are cheap and Easy to Use. You can get hot water in a very economical price. Immersion rods heat the water by using electric current. First you need to immerse immersion rods in a bucket full of water, It’s always advisable to Use Plastic buckets which cannot pass electric current through them as there are high chances of Electric Shock. Most of the Electric Shock happen due to bad quality Electric Switch Install for Immersion rod. Immersion rod gets heated up as electric current pass though it and in turn it heats the water. It takes lot of time to heat water with immersion rods. They can only heat limited quantity of water. Immersion rods are very unsafe and inconvenient. We can use Immersion rod effectively with some safety guidance like Use of Good quality of electrical outlet, Install electrical outlet by Professional Electrician & Always keep children away, when you are using Immersion rod.

Why Geyser ?

Geysers are very convenient and safe but they can be relatively expensive as compare to Immersion rod. Lots of brands are available in the market even on E-Commerce Website. You can get geysers Starting from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 20,000 depending on your budget. Geyser contain sealed metallic container mounted on a wall. A water line attached to geyser inlet valve and geyser outlet valve attached to the tap. When you switch-On electric, cold water from water line enters the geyser and heating element inside the geyser heats the water. With geysers there are less chances of electric shock but make sure geyser installation done by professional electrician near byyou. It is quite safe to use, even a child can use it easily. There is also a option of auto off where geyser automatically gets off after heating the water. There is no need to worry about safety with geysers. They can heat water in just 5 to 10 minutes. You can heat water up to 25 liters with geyser.

Water heater and immersion rods both have some advantages and some disadvantages. You can get more advantages with geyser however they are expensive if you choose some big brand name. There can be fewer features available if you go for less expensive brands. Many big brands now sale immersion rods as well as geysers however do check with them all the information before buying.

What are the benefits to using an immersion rod for your home?

No one would want to bathe in cold water during cold seasons such as the monsoon or winter. Similarly, no one would want a huge storage tank to take over space just so that you can have hot water whenever you want. This is not including the expensive bills you will get from using water heaters for long periods of time so that you get the hot water you require to the perfect temperature.

In such instances, what is the ideal way you would want to heat water, without suffering from the above-mentioned disadvantages? The solution for this case is the immersion rod. The immersion rod is a coiled rod that works as a resistor. Once an electric current is passed through the rod, its conducts heat, thus causing the surrounding area around the rod to heat up. When placed in water, it heats it up.

From the function mentioned above, you can see how this heater can work in your favour. Here are a few benefits of the immersion rod you can take advantage of:

Convenient:

One of the main benefits of this Water geyser is the convenience. It is extremely small, can be stored anywhere, when not required, as opposed to a storage tank and tankless heater, which required fixed installations and space. Whether you are heating a small bucket of water or even a large jug, you only need to place the immersion rod in the water and plug it on. Since it works on the simple physics of the joule heating, you only need to place it a small amount of water and have it heated in no time at all. Once the temperature of the water has reached your required level, you can just turn off the immersion rod and use the water.

Portable:

One of the main benefits of immersion rods is the portability. Most of the designs come in a size of 340 * 75 * 65 mm, which is sufficiently small to be stored in any cupboard, shelf or any other similar place. If you regularly shift your residence or travel a lot, this makes for a great addition to your household items. In this case, you need not be concerned about assigning space for a water heater, as it can be deposited anywhere and can be used anytime required. Additionally, it can also be used as a backup for overnight trips, in the event, there is not water heater available.

Economical:

Immersion rods are economical, as well as pocket-friendly. You need not spend thousands to invest in this heater, as compared to other options. Additionally, since it uses only electricity to conduct heat, it uses a clean form of energy, thus reducing the overall carbon footprint. Also, since you would only need to use it when you want to heat water when required, your electricity bills will not be high, especially in the long run.

The Role of an Anode Rod in Protecting Your Water Heater

If someone were to ask you what the most important appliance in your home is, how would you answer? Many homeowners would go with their water heaters—this is a true workhorse in your home, providing you with the hot water needed to shower, wash dishes, do laundry, and much more. And if you’re using the traditional storage tank water heater to do all this, then you depend a lot on a component you may not even be aware of—the anode rod.

The anode rod present in your tank water heater is likely not something you’ve heard of before, but it provides an essential function in protecting your tank water heater from harm. It doesn’t last forever, though, so it’s important that you know what condition yours is in, and whether you should call for Littleton, CO water heater services soon.

What the Anode Rod Is

This is the rod that resides in the tank of your water heater, and is most commonly composed of magnesium. This material breaks down more quickly than steel does, which is what water tanks are made of. Now, you may be asking why you’d want a magnesium rod breaking down within your water heater. Well, the anode rod breaks down and corrodes as it absorbs rust, so that your water heater tank won’t do it instead.

Protecting Your Water Heater

Steel is a very useful material. But any material, no matter how sturdy, is eventually going to rust when it’s combined with water over a long period of time. Tank water heater manufacturers understand this, so they’ve created a couple lines of defense to help your water heater last longer.

  • Glass Coating: Inside your tank, there is a glass coating—this lining prevents water from even coming into contact with the teal of the tank. But this lining doesn’t last forever—over time it begins to crack. When this occurs, the water within the tank the moves on to the steel that the water heater is composed of. This is when the second line of defense comes in…
  • The Anode Rod: This rod protects your water heater by reacting to the corrosive elements in the water more readily than steel does, so it is consumed by this material first. Therefore, your tank itself is protected from corrosion. Since the rod breaks down over time, it also means that it won’t last forever. Keeping an efficient anode rod in place is vital to protecting your hot water tank, as once the tank starts to rust, your only option is to replace it.

Turn to Us to Keep Your Water Heater in Good Shape

Regular water heater maintenance is a worthwhile investment. If you don’t invest in tune-ups for your water heater on a routine basis, you should at least have your anode rod checked every few years. If yours is past a certain point of degradation, then our plumbers can replace it so that your water geyser stays in good operational shape.

5 FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A NEW WATER HEATER

So you’ve finally decided that it’s time to retire that old water heater, but now you’re left wondering how you go about choosing your new one. It’s a big investment to consider, though it’s also one that is going to make an immediate difference to your home and your family.

HERE ARE 5 FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A NEW WATER HEATER:

  • HOW MUCH WATER DOES YOUR FAMILY USE ON A DAILY BASIS?
    • Consider # of family members. Typical individual uses 20-30 gallons of hot water daily.
    • FHR (first hour rating) – this well help determine how well the unit will operate during a busy time period. Look at the total BTU load of all of the appliances in your home that could be running at the same time (ie. shower(s), dishwasher, laundry, hot tub, etc.)
    • GPM (gallons per minute rating) –how many gallons of water can be filled per minute. The less water used per minute, the higher the water temperature achieved can be.
  • HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU HAVE FOR THIS NEW UNIT?
    • A standard size water heater is 40 gallons. While the unit itself does not need much space around it in order to be functional, you do need to make sure there is adequate space for someone to come in and service it.
    • Reminder: In 2015, the size of ALL water heaters was increased both in width and height due to federal regulation. In other words, any new unit that you decide to purchase will be larger than your previous one and will require more space.
    • Options for smaller spaces: Short or tall units, depending on how the space is limited
  • WHAT TYPE OF HEATER DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE?
    • Storage – still remains the most common residential unit. Not considered the most energy efficient unit due to the heat loss in the tank, but newer options have much better efficiency ratings than previous models.
    • On Demand or Tankless – can decrease your energy usage by 20 to 30 percent. Basically you never run out of hot water, however you may be disappointed by the low flow rate. These units will only work at optimal level with proper sizing for your family and your home, especially if your family plans on using several hot water sources at the same time.
    • Heat Pump – can either buy a unit with built in storage, or as an add-on for an existing tank. High upfront cost, needs a lot of space and should be placed in a warmer area (not cold space).
  • HOW WILL THE WATER BE HEATED UP?
    • This may depend on what you already have. If you are not happy with your current heating method, you will have to consider the budgeting options for changing to a new one.
    • Is it heated up by gas, oil, or electricity?
  • HOW MUCH ARE YOU LOOKING TO SAVE?
    • Strongly considering how efficient of a unit you want is an important part of this decision. Because there is going to be a bigger upfront cost, you do need to decide how much you truly want to save. The savings will not be immediate, but will make a difference over time.
    • Energy Star Rating: The more stars a system has, the more energy you will save
    • Energy Factor (EF): The higher the EF, the more efficient your unit
